Olin Stephens was asked by a client in 1997 if he would review his design of the legendary Dorade and make any modifications or improvements to the design which was completed in the 1920's (Dorade is currently racing in the original races she won years ago by her new owners who restored her)
Upon completion of the design for Kay of Goteborg, Walsteds of Denmark was chosen to build her. The yacht was completed in 1978 using double planked teak and oak framing. The planks were reportedly epoxied together. The deck is teak.
The many interior and exterior pictures attest to the quality of her design and construction.
According to a survey completed in November 22, 2017 the surveyor indicated that Kay is heavily build with superb craftsmanship. He added that Kay has the potential to be a highly valued yacht. He placed her replacement value at $2,000,000. U S dollars. She was hauled out in 2017 at Baja Naval Boat Yard where the bottom and hull sides were painted.
Due to the owner's declining health, deck and mast varnishing issues were neglected.
She has a Mercedes diesel with 80 horse power which propels her easily at hull speed. This listing agent crewed aboard Kay when she was motored to haul out for survey and to her current slip in Mission Bay, near San Diego and can attest to her performance under power.
