I recently took delivery of the first Dehler 46 in North America and was able to sail her on the San Francisco Bay in typically conditions, 20-25knts, two to four foot chop, swirling currents and challenging conditions. She sailed beautifully, tracking through the choppy bay going upwind in 17-20knts of breeze with authority yet comfortable enough for my wife, her mom and a friend and my two children. As the breeze built, I single handed the reefing process without any issues and she continued to track up wind efficiently.
We had an opportunity to get out of the wind behind Angel Island to drop the mainsail with the aid of a Dutchman flaking system and I furl the jib with ease. I again single handed the docking process and with a slight adjustment for wind and current, brought her in for a smooth landing.
The Dehler 46 received many compliments while at the dock as we prepared for the downwind leg home. We pulled away from the dock with ease and set a full main and jib. Most of the ride home was a beam reach to a reach in 20-25knts of breeze and the boat surfed down the waves and hit 9.5knts many times. At all times the Dehler felt under control except for one gust around 27knts, she wanted to round up. I let the main out while my wife was driving and the Dehler immediately dug in and surfed down a wave. The family gave the new Sea Wolf the following ratings:
- Below Deck: A+
- Above Deck: A+
- Comfort and Safety: A+
- Sailing Ability in the SF Bay: A+
- Handling under power: A
- Handing unders sail A+++
- JK3 Customer Service: A+
I came away from that day on San Francisco Bay believing that I finally found a boat that is exhilarating to sail, is designed well, has high quality finishes and my wife loves the interior. I have owned a few J Boats and an 11 metre over my 25 years of sailing and by far, Carl Dehler got it right with the Dehler 46. My only regret was not getting the carbon rig and larger sails!
All of this would not have been possible without the high level of customer service that I received from Diego Gomez with JK3 Yachts. His deep knowledge about sailing and the Dehler product is impressive and I credit Jeff Brown for building such a strong team in Northern California.
Thank you designing, building and supporting a beautiful yacht.
I recently sold my beloved 1999 Sabre 362 through JK3. Jack Lenox, my broker, was exceptional. He was quite knowledgeable regarding pricing the boat and staging it for sale. We had an offer the day after it was listed and the price was higher than I had expected from perusing the selling prices for Sabre 362's listed by other national brokers. Jack was easy to work with and extremely helpful in getting the deal closed while I was traveling in New York. He handled both the survey and the sea trial. I would not hesitate in listing a yacht with Jack and JK3.
It has been almost 2 years since I bought my Hanse 385 (Bonejour) from you after I saw it at the Sun Road Harbor Boar Show in 2012. I just wanted to let you know that I am still in love with the boat, sail it frequently and am proud to take friends sailing on it.
Thanks Jeff for the follow through with your staff. I want to tell you how I am impressed with the quality workmanship of my new Hanse. I'm so glad you convinced me to buy a Hanse. I'm absolutely thrilled with this new boat.
Previously, I owned a Tartan 10 for about 10 years, but was looking for a larger and more comfortable cruising boat. I had been looking for about two years and had actually come to the boat show to look at the Beneteau and Jeanneau models. They were just "OK" boats but did not have all the features that I wanted in a boat.
Serendipitously, I walked past your display and my eye was caught by the beautiful Hanse 385. I had never seen this boat here in the US before. This boat had all the features that I had wanted and a few more that I didn't even know existed. I was particularly impressed by the quality construction and workmanship of the boat.
I love the self tacking main and Jib. The power winch makes raising the sail a simple push button operation. The Lazy Jacks are a god-send as well since I hated flaking or rolling the main on my previous boat. I was impressed with the way the lines all lead under the deck and were manageable from the cockpit area. The sheet lockers were also a great feature for keeping the deck clear of extra lines.
I am a gadget freak and I love the electronic package on board. The GPS, Chart Plotter, programmable remote displays on both sides of the cockpit and autopilot give me all the information and capabilities that I need to single hand this boat. I love the stability that the 6 foot 10 inch keel with 4.8 tons of lead gives to the boat. It sails like a dream and I have not noticed any weather helm even in 20 knot winds.
This boat had the complete package for me and I am still excited to take friends out on it. Realistically, this boat is "age-appropriate" for me and as I get older I am happy that it is extremely easy to get ready to sail and put away afterward and I don't have to be a 200 pound grinder to manage it underway. My only regret is that my slip at the Coronado Yacht Club is not longer to allow me to trade up to the Hanse 505!
Thanks for introducing me to this boat and a special thanks to you, Erik and the rest of the team at JHK3 for al the support you have given to me and Susan after buying the boat. I feel like we have developed a relationship with your organization that goes beyond the standard Broker-Customer relationship.
I hope to see more Hanses here in San Diego. Best regards.
Kenyon did an excellent job directing all of the re-rigging and improvements that I wanted (angled pedestal guard, navpod, Raymarine E95 MFD, HD radar, below deck ram autopilot, AIS, Lazy Jacks, and more). She is now at rest in my slip in Mission Bay and enjoying the mild weather. I am thoroughly enjoying every minute on board.
Thank you Diego for all your support. To say we are excited is an understatement. It has been such a wonderful experience working with you and we appreciate all your advice and recommendations. One of our goals was to have the best looking boat in SF bay, because gorgeous is worth it. You know we hit it out of the park when within the first hour of taking her out, everyone we passed said "nice looking boat". You and everyone at JK3 have raised the bar in terms of support and service.
I am writing this thank you not to your team at JK3 Yachts. In particular, the level of service and professionalism shown by Diego Gomes Hall during the entire process was fabulous! The hands on approach from dealing with the other broker, the service departments in both yards, and follow up detail gave me great confidence throughout the entire purchase and delivery process. I would also commend Bob Pistay for his role in assisting Diego while the boat was being commissioned in Seattle. I would highly recommend them and your company to anyone buying or selling there next boat Sincerely,
The Dehler 38 is an amazing boat. We hit 9.5 on a broad reach Sunday with winds about 15 true. The boat kept its feet during all the gusts above that. The German engineering is apparent through out the boat. Everybody that has seen it and sailed it are amazed.I appreciate the professionalism of your company. I can't imagine having gone through this process without the fantastic assistance of Jon. He made a complex process seamless and easy. His concern for customer satisfaction is unparalleled.
Enclosed a picture of the Dehler logo I had the iron worker make into both my front fence gates. I hope you can forward them on to Germany. We find something new every day on the boat and I keep Jon informed so ideas can be sent back to the factory.
