Jim started his boating on the shores of Lake Ontario. He grew up in Upstate New York where his family had a 48-foot Chris Craft Roamer in Wilson, New York.
After earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in printing technology from the State University of New York at Oswego, also on the shores of Lake Ontario, Jim moved to Long Island, New York and worked in the financial district in Manhattan. Weekends were spent in powerboats up and down the South Shore of Long Island.
In 1994 Jim was transferred to Southern California for his printing sales career and started sailing competitively in earnest. He started the Wednesday night beer cans series out of Marina del Rey to meet people after moving here from NY. He crewed on many boats including a Cal 34, Baltic 38, and J29. In 2002 Jim bought the first of a series of racing boats he named Huckleberry (long story). His claim to fame with the first Huckleberry, a 24ft Albin Express, was to win 14 Tuesday night beer can races in a row at King Harbor.
He wanted to step up his racing and bought a Farr30 Huckleberry2 in 2008 and raced in the competitive Grand Prix one design fleet culminating with the 2012 World Championships in San Francisco.
Jim has been Commodore of both Redondo Beach YC (2005) and King Harbor Yacht Club (2012) in Redondo Beach. He is currently the president of the King Harbor Youth Foundation which runs the youth program for King Harbor Yacht Club.
While he still owns and sails his Farr30, Jim joined the Farr40 class when the world tour was in Southern California in 2016 and 2017. He owned/chartered Huckleberry 3 and competed in the Class World Championships in Long Beach and San Francisco.
In 2016 Jim saw the smaller and less expensive to campaign J70 as the up and coming one design class and bought hull 249, now also called Huckleberry. He runs an active campaign locally and competed in the 2016 World Championships in San Francisco. He is currently the national class President for the United States.
Jim also owns a Silverton 34 Sport fisher for cruising to Catalina with his wife Diane. They reside in Torrance, CA.
