Overview

Samiko is a Serendipity 43 (hull number 26) designed by the legendary Doug Peterson. She may be singlehanded (by an experienced sailor), doublehanded or sailed with crew for cruising or club racing and has shown success doing so.

 Although her hull was laid up in 1981, she remained secured but uncompleted in her cradle until the current owners had her finished  She was splashed in 1992..

Doug Peterson's quality design and Serendipity's exceptional building materials used in original construction for a yacht built at that time - use of epoxy resin and high quality fiberglass products without the use of coring material in a high-performance semi-production yacht was unheard of.

Other Serendipity 3's won SORC and international competition.  Others (Scarlet O'Hara & Wings) have successfully taken their owners on cruises across the Pacific and beyond.

While the majority of Serendipity 43's had flush racing decks, Samiko carries the later designed wedge deck with increased head room, as well as a shorter keel, making it ideal for distance cruising  into shallow Pacific harbors.

The interior plan with 2 cabin  2 head layout allows for privacy underway.

The two pilot berths provide ideal comfort at sea. Samiko's larger galley (and wine rack)  provide ample storage for supplies and cooking implements. A large partitioned ice box is housed under the stand up nav station and chart table.

A custom high performance keel was built by Doug Brewer in Santa Cruz (Doug was a well known keel  maker for most of the Santa Cruz built yachts).  This keel features a 6'2" draft which permits Samiko to sail in thin water areas while sporting a swept back leading edge.

11 bags of sails for cruising or racing convey with Samiko to provide the proper sail for nearly every wind condition.

For an engine, a reliable Westerbeke 4 cylinder 28B4 built in 1994 is coupled with a 2.47:1 reduction gearbox was installed for less vibration and longer life.

The Martec folding prop provides excellent performance and minimum drag while racing.  Two other 2 blade fixed props are included and may be easily installed for long distance motoring with maximum performance and fuel economy.

A stout Stearns two spreader mast and boom was removed, stripped, painted and inspected in 2013.

Rod rigging was replaced at that time.  Forespar vang, Navtec hydraulic backstay and Harken roller furler were also inspected and serviced. 9 winches (7 are self tailers) handle sheets and halyards well.

Samiko was last hauled out in August 2017 when  new bottom paint was applied and bottom was inspected.  Her freshly painted bottom should last 2 seasons.

A Garman 3210 color GPS map plotter/radar s driven by  stern mounted antennas and dome on an adjustable SS mast.  Autohelm knotlog and depth finders are cockpit mounted for ease of visibility. A Ritchie SP 5 compass is Edson binnacle mounted along with a 48" elk hide covered wheel and engine controls.

Samiko was built with a wedge-shaped deck which is superior to the flush deck for cruising. Two deck shapes were available, however most 43's were built utilizing the flush deck configuration.

Autohelm knotlog and depth finders are  cockpit mounted for ease of visibility.

Rig plan:

I = 56.0 ft.

P= 49.75 ft.

J = 17.70 ft.

E = 14.5 ft.

PHRF rating 69

Samiko is a true blue water cruiser/racer which has never left the West Coast. She has been a strongly constructed, well designed, lightly used, wonderful Wet Wednesday participant, Bay Area/Monterey Bay club racer, and cruiser of Northern California coastline from Monterey Bay to San Francisco Bay. Since she was launched in 1992, she has only sailed 25 of her 35 years.

She awaits her new owner to sail her to any destination on planet Earth, as she was designed and built to do.
